Until recently, all supplies and goods in Malaysia were subjected to Goods and Services tax (GST) at a standard rate of 6%. However with the change of government in the 2018 elections, it was announced that Malaysia’s GST would be abolished and replaced with the sales tax and service tax (SST). 1st June 2018 saw the rate reduced from 6% to 0%, with the SST likely to be implemented towards the later part of this year.
While the decision to bring back the Sales and Services Tax (SST) is yet to be finalised, companies in Malaysia should prepare themselves adequately to avoid any penalties and ensure smooth business operations.
